Wheel throwing is a graceful negotiation with physics. The first and most critical step is the same at the wheel as it is in life: finding center. It’s the only way to transform a lump of earth into something useful and beautiful: a vessel with purpose.
Centering is not passive or cerebral; it’s kinetic. The only way to learn is to do it, feel it, falter, and begin again, until the body learns to sense alignment. With practice, the knowledge becomes embodied. From that steady center, everything else can rise.
Plumbline was formed from these lessons at the wheel.
A plumb line is a tool used to ensure structures are built to last. When dangling from a string, the plumb pulls down, reaching for the center of gravity of the Earth. When the plumb is aligned with the center of the Earth, the attached string creates a line that is perfectly vertical—or “true.”
Plumbline is a symbol of the ongoing practice of centeredness and a celebration of the remarkable everyday beauty that results.
